Mainstream and Leftfield play a mix of
music you already know and that which you probably have never heard
before. This mix can be heard by anyone* who happens to be up
at midnight on a Monday night/Tuesday morning,
Simon Mainstream plays his choice of
better known indie, dance, more indie, rock, nineties indie,
breakbeat, indie punk and brit pop trip hop hip hop. Nick Leftfield
plays some genre-phobic sounds normally reserved for the ears
of his neighbours.

The excitement in the studio was mounting as Simon Mainstream introduced yet another feature (no not a third eyebrow) called "Now that's what I call mainstream". The first ever song on the "Now" series was by Phil Collins, so instead we played it safe and gothjazzy with The Cure. 1983, that was the year. This was our 3rd best show ever, you had to be there. And finally... we were humbled by Carl Sagar's talk on the subject of our insignificance in relation to a small blue dot.

We tried a new feature which was reading stuff out of the newspaper and then commenting on it. As ever with any of our experiments, it had mixed results. Simon made a boo boo by playing a song that has been played on this show once before, but at least it was a different mix.

Nick said Cyndi Looper was a satinist, we are still waiting for the backlash. Izzy from Oh the Mirth said she might listen now that we are on earlier. We discussed punching a moose in the head, but only a plastic moose. In Nick's world, Billy Baxter makes John Noakes scrape bird poo off Nelson's bottom from within a bosun's chair.

Simon was woefully under-prepared due to holiday lateness so just grabbed some CDs from the car, and the music selection was all the better for it. STAB is our favourite station ident. Kalimba comes a close 2nd. Remember, recycling isn't part of the foreplay process but is still very important. We didn't play anything by them, but please remember The Doors are just called "Doors".

We thought it was a good idea to make some

good idea. There was some oddness with the ordering and there was a
couple of leftfield clusters and a mainstream
dangleberry.

Nick was off seeing the Derek Nimmo twins talk about the wonky market place and Mr. Perry, so Part-time Patch heroically stepped up to the leftfield job again. Simon played a track by an artist he has chosen before, and wondered if the mainstream music supply is starting to run dry. The answer is no. Would a 70's detective duo called Mainstream and Leftfield have been solving or creating musical crimes? Mince pies already!

Nick rolled up a ball of string but not on the show. We pretended to have a crazy dance party and Nick dramatised clubbers calling in and shouting "oyoy" down the phone from Lick in Poringland. We considered renaming our show "The Tune" after Nick had a typo with his voice. We won't though. Pat Metheny's surname is pronounced "muh-thee-nee". Happy birthday Adam Tinley (Adamski). Just good music! And some rubbish talking. We
talked a lot about old british sci films. John Wymondham has our

this show, but it was high quality overflow. As well as John
Wy-mond-ham we bigged up Paul Lavers, a late night legend. I helped

Nick Leftfield was ill or climbing a mountain
or trying-out for being presenter of this year's Children In Need
when they cut to a dismal car park in the East Anglia region and
point at cheques raised by well-meaning charitable types. Not a lot
happened in this show, hence my waffling, but good music was
played, even though PTP and Simon were not completely sure that
listeners would like very much that was played.

Films are great and some of the best ones involve zombies. Nick

you from the 2nd worst slot of the week, Nick didn't bring us a
Japan special, but did play songs by Japanese artists and gave us
Japanese facts. The best member of The Jackson 5 was Gigantic
Jackson. Cornelius, who is from Japan, has been on Yo Gabba Gabba.
Nick wowed us with his 'Muse at the NAC' story, which consisted of
him having seen Muse at the NAC. Did you know that elementary
school students in Japan wear yellow caps? SHOW HIJACK: Happy

Who knows? It's a crazy old world after all, and if you are not there to hear it, did it ever really happen in the first place? The answer, of course, is yes, and anyone who says different should be ignored until they question their own existence. What I do know is that we played some songs and spoke intellectual words, none of which will actually have been while the microphones were turned up. Always the way.

Despite
being 1am (to 2.10am) and therefore dark and quite cold, we
presented a summertime special to rock your cockles and
muscles to. Simon mostly played songs that didn't
mention summer, because he is a doofus, but the tunes were hot
all the same. Nick made a SICK!!!! but funny joke about
Klaus Wunderlich dying of organ failure, not knowing that he died
in 1997 of an unamusing heart attack. Christopher Biggins sat in
the corner, and we lamented the lack of Bernie Clifton with
his ostrich. RIP Klaus.

Sarah was delightfully back, to fill in for Simon Mainstream who
was climbing Mount Everest in Scotland. Sarah thrilled everyone
with her eighties classics, unfortunately she missed the boat with
the previous eighties special. Nick thrilled everyone except Sarah
with some dancehall riddims, but was back in favour due to some
American politico-folk-pop.

The
Eighties happened, there is no denying it. And if you remember it,
it' s because
you were there. Opinions about music from that decade vary,
but most people will agree that it wasn't the coolest era for
music. This is because the nineties was the coolest. Or was it the
sixties? Anyway, we took time out to find some music that
definitely was cool in the Eighties. The Jam have a drummer who can
go nutzoid. Trevor Horn was unarguably the biggest producer of the
80s, and his music was horny.

This was
quite an exciting show, culminating in a psychedelic freakout in
the dark There were a couple of shocks tonight, when Nick played
some classical music, and then chose an acoustic singer songwriter
type as his favourite mainstream song of the night. Simon managed
to sound fairly professional despite bing tickled whilst performing
his serious DJ work. He wasn't impressed by the ironically cheesy

We braved
the biggest storm of the century to bring you this show, yet
managed not to catch any impressive thunder on air, just the
drumming of rain on the roof. We experimented with recording the
show whilst standing rather then sitting, in order to act as
lighting conductors. Still, the electricity held out and we played
some tunes, first some leftfield, and then some mainstream, and
kept flip-flopping like that.

We
pretended we were an animal song based children's show for a couple

week was our first Mainstream and Leftfield competition, for a
Sports Radio, with AM and FM functionality. The question asked of
listeners to answer to win this fantastic prize was "How could you
make sport vaguely tolerable". Simon played Art Brut, which is par
for the course, he likes Art Brut.

We tried
for a bit of a preamble before the first tune, but it all sounded a
bit akward and Nick took the piss by pretending he was playing
records by deceased double glazing genius Ted Moult. Then he
freaked out Simon by playing something so mainstream it went all
the way round back to being leftfield. Simon played a very rude
song about oral rudeness, and we sniggered quite a lot. We learnt
that we are now in the Age of Aquarius, but Woolworths is shut, so
we can no longer buy hippy wigs.

without Nick to keep him in touch, talked far too much. Simon

It was
Guilty Pleasures this week with Nick Leftfield and special guest
presenter Stand-in Sarah, who plumbed the depths of embarrasing
excellence in music. Sarah's choice was varied from some excellent
power rock, to some dubious pastiche rock and roll. Nick had more
difficulty, due to a lack of guilt about listening to any music he
likes. So he tried to find tunes that he'd be embarrased to listen
to on the car stereo really loud with the windows open.

Mainstream amazed everyone with the most amazing fact ever given on
the show - The Black Crowes are at number 92 on VH1's top 100 of
hard rock bands - it is doubtful whether we will ever beat this
fact. Nick barely managed a full sentence about Moondog who as a
blind homeless Viking is possibly the most interesting artist we

welcomed Nick back with a complimentary project thing. Then it was
down to business with our drum and bass special. Simon picked some
of the best quality, best known DnB tunes of the ages. Whilst Nick
delved into his fossilised vinyl collection and performed a couple
of mixes on his dusty decks. We got a bit confused about LTJ
Bukem's name, which seemed like a clue from the game show 321. We
listened to some cockney ephemera, and Simon made a honking noise
at inappropriate moments.

Mainstream and Leftfield prayed at the altar of music, and did
learn that religious music is cool. We were slightly hampered by a
muffled mic and shared the hamper by swapping sides on alternate
songs. This only added to the slightly haphazard nature of the
show, so in retrospect maybe God was conspiring against
us. Nick tried hard not to sound mocking or patronising but isn't
sure he managed it. Secular music which references

the missing lyrics from the Star Trek theme. They sang like an
angel - Dave Angel. We made contact with the real Gary Numan and an
unfamous Jeremy Clarkson, and narrowly avoided disaster when Nick
issued the command to fire photon torpedos or summat.

This
was a bit of an odd show. The Guy Skornik tune that was played had
previously been chosen for our "Best of 2008" show. We discussed in
length how much we disliked the The Verve single "Love is Noise" as
if it was a contemporary issue. Then Leftfield Nick claimed that
the Raw Q song was from this year - 2008. To the inexperienced
listener, this might sound like we broadcast an old show. However
it was actually an accident involving a modified DeLorean
travelling at 88 mph. Simon won a nasal inhaler.

Shankar was compared to Irish band 'A House', Nick introduced us to
Jeff Mills ("He's cool"). There was a lot of dancing in the studio
- including some hip-hoppity moves to White Lines (FREEZE!), nude
pagan dancing to Paul Giovanni's 'Maypole Song', and sexy dancing
to LCD Soundsystem. No one played the wrong track at any point, so
it must have been Stand-in Sarah on-board for part-timer Simon

Oh!
He's gone again, and Stand-in Sarah is back in the studio, doing
what she does best - standing in!!! And choosing some exceptionally
tasteful, but mainstream tunes. An interesting discussion was
nearly engaged in about whether it is possible for an artist to
have commercial success and also critical acclaim (if you aren't
Talking Heads). Nick played a sitar segway, and then a sci-fi
segway, to critical disapproval, and commercial failure.

Simon
returned to the Mainstream and Leftfield HQ after a mysterious
disappearance which he was hard-pressed to explain. Certainly a
sensitive area of his anatomy had been hard pressed! Somehow he had
cobbled together some excellent mainstream tunes (except for
Salt-n-Pepa which had gone a bit stale in the hip-hop-bread-bin).

Celebrity Big Brother; searching for ska in Jamaica; scuba diving
in Antarctica; and a James Bond style secret mission. Nick
Leftfield coped in his absence by roping in his missus, Stand-in
Sarah, who played some cracking tunes.

We
begin with nosebleed gabba, before Simon put his comfortable indie
slippers on and brought us all back to earth. He moved
geographically southwards (with a few extreme shifts east and
west). Nick began asking awkward questions which should only be
reserved only for keen cartographers. We do learn a little about
morse cold, hippos and rhinos, now who said pop music wasn't
educational?
Simon
revealed that of 12 Smiths albums, 8 are compilations, and Nick
revealed that Behemoth are a bit cross. The angry theme continued
with The Ruts and N.W.A who are also a bit shouty. In what may
be a first for radio throughout the world, Nick played a song
called "Poo" which consisted mainly of farty squelchy noises.
Accidentally, there was a proper link between two songs but
hopefully this will not happen again. Sorry.

Simon
and Nick dressed up for the occasion. Nick did it properly with a
Christmas hat and a sleigh bell accessory but Simon for some reason
wore a pirate disguise. Mature humour was provided courtesy of
letting balloons go, and party poppers were let off but care was
taken not to let any bits get into the studio technical
trickery. Nick threatened to beat the Christmas feeling into any
listeners that weren't feeling Christmassy, which isn't very
Christmassy. A harp and it's harpist caused a change of studio half
way through. Simon made Nick's eyes bleed by shouting "It's
Christmas!" in a Noddy Holder stylee. In return, Nick tricked Simon
by pretending he had a present for him. Fake present = Fresent..
Nick sang his Christmas song, like an angel - Dave Angel. Simon
said "Icing Sugar" in a reggae stylee and Nick thought it was the
funniest thing he had ever said. Hmmm. Nick remembered Rick
Wakeman's name just in the Saint Nick of time. Nick played the
first ever recording of Jon Bon Jovi in a song by R2D2 - no really.
Mince pies definitely weren't eaten because food isn't allowed in
the studio. MINCE PIES!

the music was still great quality!

The
show opened with the best opener we have so far sound, dampened
only by Simon's dislike for protest songs. Nick tried to be clever
by having a theme for all his tunes, which nobody except the most
hardened music nerd would be able to deicpher. We decided that
tunes by White Denim are generally available, and that most of the
ones that Nick played aren't. Nobody could believe how dated The
JAMS sounded.

We
started off the show with some manically tense psy-trance, before
being brought back to earth with some pop-hip-pop from Outkast. We
were confused by the character '#', which means number. Simon
didn't believe that Arcade Fire were named after a fire in an
arcade. A fork with a sausage flew through the studio. The Prodigy
largely disappointed, which made us very nostalgic for happier

Nick
was very careful over his pronunciation of Charlie Kunz, and
Simon demonstrated his particular flair for ignorance by scoffing
at Nick for saying Ska had its origins in Jamaica. Nick
played yet another song that sounded like Devo, which ain't no bad
thing. Finally Simon bigged-up this website again and fears he may
have come across a bit aggressive, but with any luck this was
balanced out by the soothing hold music that was Nick's final
